Name the practice, not only the power

A magic system is easier to remember when its name says something about how people live with it. “Fire magic” describes an effect, but it does not explain who learns it, what it costs, or why a city might regulate it. Decide whether the name belongs to scholars, priests, smugglers, soldiers, or ordinary people who fear the results. Each group may use a different term for the same power.

Begin with a source and a limit

Give the system one source: breath, memory, stars, contracts, bloodlines, weather, craft, or a living landscape. Then pair it with a limit. A practice powered by spoken promises will produce different names from one that consumes years of a caster's life. The limit is often more useful than the spectacle because it creates a reason people have rules, taboos, schools, and arguments about the power.

Separate formal and everyday language

An academy may call a discipline by an old ceremonial term while workers use a practical nickname. This creates texture without requiring a complete invented language. Write one name for a textbook, one for a warning sign, and one for a person who uses the power illegally. If all three sound like they came from the same culture, the system will feel more grounded.

Build room for discovery
